All eyes will be on Houston, the home of human spaceflight, as the world celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing and Neil Armstrong’s first steps on the Moon on July 20, 2019.

Special screening: Chasing the Moon
Join us July 16 at 7 p.m. for a special screening and panel discussion of Chasing the Moon, a three-part documentary by Robert Stone. The screening will be an excerpt of the film titled Magnificent Desolation and will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Stone and Roger Launius, a former NASA chief historian. The film utilizes archival material, much of which has never been seen by the public and features Northcutt, a 25-year old “mathematics whiz” who gained worldwide attention as the first woman to serve in the all-male bastion of NASA’s Mission Control.

Apollo 11 50th Live is an all-day lunar celebration and countdown to Neil Armstrong’s first steps on the Moon. Discover an array of space-themed experiences including late-night NASA Tram Tours, notable speakers, book signings, an outdoor festival with a concert, a family STEM zone, and more.
The first 15,000 Apollo celebration guests receive a commemorative LED wristband that glow throughout the indoor experience, during the concert and the official first steps countdown at 9:56 p.m. Wristbands will be issued onsite to ticket holders. Special presentation: Apollo Engineering Design, Development, and Certification Challenges
Landing Apollo 11 on the Moon was a watershed event for humanity. But, the Apollo program required unprecedented engineering innovations so that Neil Armstrong could take that fateful first step. Join us at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. July 21 in the Mission Briefing Center for panel discussions about the Apollo engineering design, development and certification challenges. Panelists for the first presentation at 11:30 a.m. will include spacecraft propulsion engineer Henry Pohl, structures and materials engineer Tom Moser and spacesuit subsystem manager Jim McBarron. Panelists for the second presentation at 1:30 p.m. include Don Travis, tracking and communication; Ed Smith, Guidance, navigation and vehicle control, and Harry Erwin. They’ll discuss the unique challenges of building a system to dock two spacecraft while in orbit, transit to the Moon, land on its surface and return safely.

Apollo 11 Mission Splashdown Party (6-10 p.m.)
This fun, 1960s-themed evening bash will feature live music and activities as attendees are surrounded by Space Center Houston’s extensive collection of Apollo-era artifacts, as well as lots of interactive exhibits and activities featuring the exciting present and future of human space exploration. THE FAB 5, a Beatles tribute band based in Space City, will recreate the spirit and enthusiasm of the 60s and 70s through a performance beginning at 6 p.m. Food and drink will be available for purchase.

NASA Tram Tours featuring Apollo Mission Control Center at NASA Johnson Space Center
The only way to see what goes on behind the scenes at NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) is through Space Center Houston. The center’s NASA Tram Tours feature an opportunity to visit the Apollo Mission Control Center, a national historic landmark. From this iconic room, the NASA team exercised full mission control of Apollo 11 from leaving the launch pad at the Kennedy Space Center to splashdown in the Pacific Ocean. Just in time for the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission, the room has been restored back to how it originally looked in the 1960s. Visitors this summer will be among the first to see the restored control center and feel like they are stepping back in time as they watch the original consoles operate and enjoy an immersive audio-visual experience that will allow them to witness the pivotal moments of the Apollo 11 mission in the same space where they happened. Availability will be limited, so timed tickets will be offered on site on a first come, first serve basis.
