This week in 1983, Sally K. Ride became the first American woman in space, nearly 20 years after Soviet Valentina Tereshkova became the first female to break the Earth’s bounds.

On her first of two missions, Ride helped mobilize two different satellites in her role as mission specialist. She was responsible for the 50-foot remote manipulator arm used to maneuver payloads in and out of the shuttle’s cargo bay.

In Space Center Houston’s Astronaut Gallery, a pair of Ride’s in-flight coveralls commemorate her historic contribution to space exploration.

You can visit this exhibit when we re-open on July 1, but first, please help unscramble this photo of Ride’s coveralls.
