Event description: In honor of National STEM Day on Nov. 8, Space Center Houston will welcome 500 Houston-area students to engage in authentic science learning activities, helping to make the connection from the classroom to solving real world challenges in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. In interactive presentations and hands-on activities, students will learn about the science and innovation propelling present and future human spaceflight.
Participating students are from Houston Independent School District Title 1 schools Wesley Elementary School, Davila Elementary School, Deady Middle School, Booker T. Washington High School and Milby High School.
Students will hear from Space Center Houston’s chief science officer and NASA astronaut Megan McArthur and learn about her journey becoming an astronaut and insight about how science and space exploration learning is for everyone. See students design their own lunar lander, take part in interactive Pop-up Science Labs and be immersed in the story of space.
National STEM Day is an opportunity for Space Center Houston to serve the Houston community and inspire students to realize the significance of space exploration. The center is also addressing critical gaps in the development of the STEM workforce through its education programs and outreach events such as National STEM Day.
Space Center Houston’s immersive education programs enable students with critical 21st century skills, including building leadership and problem-solving skills and how to formulate research-based questions. Students learn about the people driving space exploration and innovation and participate in an array of practical learning activities that meet a variety of knowledge needs.
Thanks in part to generous donations from organizations including Boeing, Chevron, Phillips 66 and Booz Allen Hamilton, Space Center Houston’s education programs have impacted more than 250,000 students and teachers annually from across the globe.
Additionally, Space Center Houston’s Girls STEM Pathway initiative, presented by Boeing, engages girls with 21st-century skills to fuel their imaginations and provide authentic learning experiences in STEM careers. The comprehensive, six-phase initiative includes an introductory elementary school experience, a middle school project-based STEM experience, a summer bridge program with mentoring support and a program for high school girls to engage in scientific research.
